City Flowers
My project City Flowers began after my partner died from cancer, late November 2019. After her death, I took responsibility for her raised garden box in a community garden in Red Hook, Brooklyn. I don’t think I had ever even owned a houseplant before, but I wanted to care for her garden -to keep some part of her alive, to do something for her, to keep her close. I also needed a place to grieve that wasn’t my apartment, and the garden, filled with memories of us, became that place.
Around this time, I started walking the streets of New York City with my camera. As I walked, I noticed flowers everywhere. They reminded me of the garden and of her. Photographing them became a way to stay connected to our love, and to the small, persistent beauty that continues to grow in the city, even in grief.
